Guardiola’s assistant Juanma Lillo will take charge of the squad.
“The Manchester City boss has had a bit of a bad back pain recently and has left for Barcelona for surgery urgently,” City said in a statement.
“The surgery was successful and Pep will now undergo the recovery process in Barcelona. He is expected to return after the break following international matches soon.”
Champions City are currently in second place in the EPL standings with six points from two games.
They travel to newcomers Sheffield United this Saturday before visiting Fulham on September 2.
